Throughout the later half of 2009 I was lucky enough to be a part of the team that created the Province of British Columbia’s first “blogs .” It was an exciting endeavour – it meant using an open-source platform, WordPress, for the first time, and commenting enabled a new tool for citizen engagement, in this case on the modernization of the Water Act.
The site needed to fit in with existing templates and specifications developed by government’s communication arm, as well as security and privacy regulation. We did considerable work around privacy policy – determining what information about citizens government could collect, what it couldn’t, and how it was to be documented. The Living Water Smart blog was one of the first blogs we launched, and was recognized as a leading initiative by citizen engagement experts and government 2.0 enthusiasts across the country.
As a Business Analyst, Information Architecture I captured business and functional requirements and translated them into technical specifications for our development team. The tool we created has served it’s purpose well, and is still in use today:
